Do’s and Don’ts for Reference Giving
Do’s and Don’ts for Reference Giving
The Do’s
- Know what sort of company and position the person is applying for. This will help you to personalise your reference and highlight relevant useful information.
- Speak highly of the person, but be honest. If you cannot give a positive reference, it is best not to say anything at all.
- Be available to answer any questions the Hiring Manager may have about the person you are referencing.
The Don’ts
- Don't speak negatively about the person you are referencing, even if asked directly by the Hiring Manager. This will only reflect poorly on both you and the actual individual.
- Don't offer more information than what is asked for. Stick to the facts and avoid giving your personal opinion.
- Don't provide a reference for someone you don't know well or whose work you are not familiar with. This could backfire and damage your own reputation.
